  • The objective of this study was to measure the effects of mercury pollution due to the waste from gold mining in Kahayan river by using Kapuas Murung river in Central Kalimantan as control. This study was a cross-sectional observational study by means of sampling approach to determine the level of exposure, and comparison of neurological disorder occurred in exposed group to those in control group. Each group consisted of 30 samples. Results revealed that mercury content in the river had been above the permissible threshold recommended by life environmental department in Indonesia, showing the occurrence of pollution as indicated by the difference between exposed and control group (p = 0,000). Mercury content in catfish (A,fys/mx nemurus), however. remained under the maximum level of consumable fish as recommended by WHO, on which both group showed signify difference (p = 0,01 1). Mercury content in hair had been under the permissible threshold, on which both group showed difference (p = 0,000). Neurological disorders due to mercury intoxication, which were different in both group, were paraesthesia, in exposed group was 63.3 % and control group 26.7 % (p = 0,009); behavior abnormality/neurops_ychiatric disorder, in exposed group 76.7 % and in control group 26.7 % (p = 0.000); hearing disorder, in exposed group 23.3 5 and in control group 3,3 % (p = 0,05); and eye disorder, in exposed group 50.0 % and in control group 6.77 % (p = 0.001).
