social class to be able to master the position as the dominant social class. The
concept of hegemony has been developed by Gramsci. Learning hegemony in
literary works is one thing that is important to know the existence of hegemony
itself. In fiction, hegemony can be studied to find its existence by analyzing the
intrinsic elements that exist in fiction. The writer chose “Representation of
hegemony in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart” as the title of this research. This
research has two purposes: To find out the plot, setting and character in Achebe’s
Things Fall Apart, and to find out the plot, setting and character describe the
hegemony in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. The writer limits the research into
analyzing that plot just focused on exposition, conflict, climax, and resolution.
Character and traits just focused on protagonist and antagonist. Then setting just
focused on the setting of time, place, and social. The writer analyzed appearance
hegemony using Gramsi’s concept that has been analyzing in intrinsic elements
before. This research is expected to provide knowledge in analyzing the
hegemony, especially, about what is the strategy and what kind of hegemony that
occurs in a fictional work. The description of hegemony is collected either
through the dialogues and the narration that has analyzed in intrinsics in the novel.
The writer using qualitative and descriptive method to analyzed. The writer found
the plot such as exposition describes main character’s life and the Igbo custom.
The conflict describes contention between the missionaries and the Igbo people.
Climax explains how Okonkwo as the main character killed the missionaries.
Resolution figures that Okonkwo suicided and hanged himself on the tree. The
writer found the character and traits that protagonist are Okonkwo (the main
character) and Obierika (Okonkwo’s close friend).Then antagonist are Nwoye
(Okonkwo’s son), the missionaries (Mr. Brown, Mr. Smith), and Enoch (the Igbo
people who convert). The setting in the novel is about in the 1890s in Nigeria
during colonialism and imperialism era. The result of the analyzing intrinsic
element then the writer found the appearance of hegemony that contains in the
novel. The kind of hegemony in the novel is integral hegemony. It means there are
two aspects to rules the clan using moral-intellectual leadership (consensus) and
domination (coercion). Consensus has roled by Mr.Brown to take control the Igbo
custom (religion and trade). Then coercion has roled by Mr. Smith to carry out the
government. As the conclusion in this analysis, the hegemony that exists in this
novel appears with a variety of strategies for using the integral concept of
hegemony. It means the concept of hegemony it does not appear accidentally but
