- Abstract Communities around forest areas have a high dependency on the forest ecosystem. Due to its function to provide livelihoods for the community, it requires efforts to improve and increase community participation and good governance to allow the function of the forest runs well and able to be utilized optimally. Conservation strategies involving local communities seem to be more effective rather than just preservation that only involving the government. By increasing public awareness to the importance of preservation function in a region, it will be able to maintain the balance of ecosystem and economic functions for the local community. The study of community participation in community forest in Jorong Timbo Abu Nagari Kajai Talamau West Pasaman aims to describe the implementation of community forest, measure the level of participation and analyze the relationship between the internal factors and the level of public participation in community forest management. The research used survey as the method of study using the qualitative and quantitative analysis. The study showed the implementation of community forest in Nagari Kajai began in 2011 with an application for permit of working area determination sent to the Ministry of Forestry through the Regional Government of West Pasaman by Maju Bersama Community Forest Group. After permit was received, the implementation activity involved farmer groups, NGO and other relevant stakeholders. To achieve the objective of the study, level of community participation in forest management is measured. The level of community participation in community forest was classified into two categories, low and high. From the analysis of the level of community participation, the relationship between internal factors and level of community participation showed that internal factors did not influence the level of participation. But the level of participation was influenced by the dependency on forest. Keywords: participation, community forest, the level of participation
