Communicative Competence in Speaking Activities of English Textbook for Eleventh Grade Students at Senior High School

- This study aimed to investigate the communicative competence in the speaking activity of English Textbook for eleventh-grade students. This study was a qualitative approach using content analysis. The data and source of data were the instructions of speaking activities in eight chapters of the English Textbook for Eleventh Grade Students at SMA Swasta PAB 1 Medan Estate, entitled Bahasa Inggris Stop Bullying Now. The data were collected by observing the book, write the instructions, and group all of the instructions into speaking communicative activities by (Littlewood, 2018), the namely communicative continuum. The data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis by (Miles et al., 2014). The results proved that communicative speaking activities in the textbook have five stages, namely non-communicative learning (11.76%), pre-communicative language practice (41.17%), communicative language practice (14.70%), structured communication (23.52%), and authentic communication (8.82%).
