Code Switching by the Teacher in EFL Online Teaching and Learning Process at SMAN 7 Medan

- The aims of this study are to analyze the types of code switching by the teachers in EFL online teaching and learning process and to analyze the teachers’ reasons of the use code switching. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The sources of this data were the two EFL teachers at SMAN 7 Medan. This study used observation and interview as the data collection methods. The observation was done through video recording on zoom meeting platform sessions and the interview was done to confirm teachers’ use of code switching based on the recording. There were three ways of action to analyze the data, they were data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The analysis showed that the teachers used code switching in teaching English. The teachers not only used English (L2) in teaching English, but also sometimes they switched their language into Bahasa (L1). Three main types of code switching were used by the teachers in EFL online teaching and learning process at SMAN 7 Medan. The types were Intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and tag switching. For intra-sentential switching, the teachers only used Phrases class switching. For inter-sentential switching, the teacher uttered the clause level. For tag switching, the researcher found that the teachers used both interjection code switching and question tag switching. The most frequently used by the teachers was inter-sentential switching with clause level. There were five reasons why the teachers did code switching in EFL teaching and learning process, they are to translate the unknown vocabulary, to explain grammar, to manage the classroom, to emphasize some point, and to express empathy and solidarity.
