An Analysis of Factors Affecting Students’ Anxiety in Speaking English at Grade XI of SMA PAB 4 Sampali

- This study investigated foreign language anxiety of EFL high school students at grade XI of SMA PAB 4 Sampali. Specifically, it sought to identify what factors and its reasons that may contribute to students’ anxiety in speaking English based on the students’ perspectives. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained through questionnaire and interview. Thirty-five students were selected as the source of the data to answer The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) by Horwitz and Cope (1986) then ten of thirty-five students with the highest score by fill the questionnaire were interviewed by used the question from Price. The result of the study showed in four factors, they are being laughed by their friends with 10%, afraid of making mistakes with 20%, don’t understand the topic and material with 30%, and the last when asked to present in front of the class with 40%. The reason why those factors affect them because they felt difficult when they should learn and mastering English, understand the topic and the material, and the most reason that make them anxious is because they should present to speak or read the text by using English in front of their friend and also their teacher. they are anxious that they will be making mistakes while speak in front of the class, they also afraid will laughed by their friends and most of the reason from them are because they don’t understand well about English subject, what is the topic discuss about and even what should they do in teaching-learning process.
