Flouting Maxim of Humor in Digidoy Comic Strips

- This study focuses on flouting Maxim of Humor in Digidoy Comic Strips using Grice’s theory. Grice expressed cooperative principle to suggest that in conversational interaction people work on the assumption that a certain set of rules is in operation, unless they receive indications to the contrary. The maxims of cooperative principle are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. This research aims to answer the following questions: (1) What maxims are flouted by the characters to create humor in Digidoy Comic Strips; and (2) What are the forms of humor created by maxim flouting in Digidoy Comic Strips, last (3) How are the functions of humor created by maxim flouting in Digidoy Comic Strips. This research is conducted using qualitative method. The data sources of this research are ten comic strips are chosen for they have been liked by more followers and also on the basis of monthly post. The data are collected using the check list of the Digidoy Comic Strips from January to April 2017 and then analyzed based on the flouting on each maxim of humor. At the end, the researcher draws the conclusion which is in accordance with the research finding. The results of the study show that there are four flouting maxim of the Humor in Digidoy comic Strips. These maxims are: (1) maxim of quantity (2) maxim of quality, (3) maxim of relation, and (4) maxim of manner. The dominant maxim that is flouting is maxim of quality which occurred (40%), whereas the other maxim such as maxim of manner occurred (30%), maxim of relation (20%) and maxim of quantity only occurred (10%).
