  • This research objective are to know the effectiveness of instructional and the effect of inquiry training instructional model on formal operational thinking on sound wave topic in class XI SMA Negeri 1 Tebing Tinggi. The type of this research is quasi-experiment design using pre-test and post-test. The population is all of students of class XI which consist of 9 classes, there are 2 classes for the sample, one class as experiment class using Inquiry Training model and the other class as control class. The instrument in this research is essay test. Based on this research, the average score of pre-test in experiment class is 34.35 and in control class is 34.53, and then the average score of post-test in experiment class is 66 and in control class is 60. Based on the hypothesis test show that Ha is accepted, it means there is effect of Inquiry Training Learning model on student’s formal operational thinking on sound waves topic in Class XI SMA N 1 Tebing Tinggi Academic Year 2017/2018.
