  • This study was aimed at finding out the teachers’ talk category, and the roles of the teacher during classroom interaction in teaching speaking at SMP NEGERI 2 Hamparan Perak in academic year 2016/2017. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of this study were two English teachers of two classses. The instruments for collecting data were observation, recording and interview. The data were analyzed by using FLINT system. The categories of the teachers talk in the English class were the indirect teachers talk and direct teachers talk. Both of the teacher produced 128 utterances. The categories of indirect influences produced 91 utterances and 37 utterances in direct influences. The catagories of teachers talk that were employed by the teacher during the teaching and learning process affected the students in learning particularly deals with feelings and praises/encourages (indirect influence), gives information and gives directions (direct influence). From the result, it can be concluded that the teachers were effective in classroom interaction in teaching speaking and the students interact with the teacher in classroom
