  • This study is intended to identify teaching strategies used by the English teacher in teaching listening. The research problems of this research was what teaching strategies are used by the English teacher in teaching listening for senior high school students. The method of this research was qualitative research. It is used to describe something that is known to have happened in the process of teaching activity. In conducting the research, the researcher collected data through observation. Then, the research interviewed the English teacher to gather information which is supported the result obtained from observation. The subjects of this research were the English teacher at Madrasah Aliyah Balongrejo. The study found that the teachers used some strategies in teaching listening deal with the teacher activities in pre-, while-, and post- listening activities in the classroom. In pre-listening the teacher used bottom-up and top-down strategy. In bottom up strategy, the teacher focused to teach vocabulary to the students and top-down strategy is used by the teacher to build the students prior knowledge of the topic. In while-listening activities, the teacher used top-down strategy. The focused on the students in building the students prior knowledge of the text and the content of the text. Then, in post-listening, the teacher used bottom-up strategy. The strategy used by the teacher is focusing the students to learn about sounds and vocabulary. Keyword: Listening, Teaching strategy
