- The research problem of this research was the strategies implemented by the English teacher at SMP DU 1 in teaching reading for the first grade. The method of this research was qualitative research. The subject of this research was the English teacher at the first grade of SMP DU 1. The aim of this research to made students enjoy learning English especially in reading. In conducting the research, the researcher collected data through observation. Then the research interviewed the English teacher to get more information. The result of this research there were three reading stages of teacher‟s strategy. In pre-reading stage, the teacher applied the following strategy: (1) Sequencing picture; and (2) Discussing new word. Then, in while-reading stage, the teacher used the following strategies: (1) Reading aloud; (2) Reading silent; and (3) Propose re-read. Next, in post reading stage, the teacher conducted the following strategies: (1) Question-Answer; and (2) Summarizing. The application of the strategies contributed positively to the student‟s learning process. The aim of this research to made students enjoy learning English especially in reading.
