  • Land is an area on the earth surface which consists of the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and objects on it which can affect the land utilization. One essential function of land is to produce agricultural biomass in which the optimalization of land productivity must be prioritized in order to increase biomass production. One important strategy to optimize land productivity is by managing soil fertility. This management aims to optimize land productivity. The purpose of soil fertility evaluation is to assess soil characteristics, to determine fertility limiting factors, and to decide the management alternatives in order to improve land productivity. The assessment of soil characteristics and limiting factors can be carried out by using Fertility Capability Classification (FCC). This approach was utilized to evaluate the land in Sub-district of Selo in the Regency of Boyolali. This study was conducted from March to May 2015. Using Geographical Information System (GIS), the selection and mapping of soil sample points, descriptive-exploratory analysis of the actual land condition, as well as the results of soil analysis from the laboratory were analyzed to determine the FCC. Results of this study were: 1) In general the potential soil fertility in Selo was restricted by the local precipitation, low availability of P and K, low level of Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), surface rocks, and the degree of land slopes; and 2) The primary limiting factors for optimum soil fertility were the availability of crop water requirement (precipitation) as well as the availability of P and K elements.
