  • Despite of the importance of listening as one of the language skills (Ridgeway, 2000), second language learners do not easily deal with listening process, because the second language learners should understand not only words, but also the speaker’s choice of words and meaning based on the situation (Underwood, 1989). It is difficult for them who learn English as second language. Therefore, the second language learners used their strategies to cope with the difficulties. Oxford (2003) proposed six major strategies used by second language learners in listening. Based on those strategies, this study aims to find out students’ strategies to cope with the difficulties in Interpersonal Listening Class of the English Department of Satya Wacana Chritian University Salatiga semester 1 Academic Years 2012/2013. To get the data, this study was done by distributing questionnaires to 62 students of Interpersonal listening class. The data showed that the students faced difficulties, such as lack of understanding speaker’s speech, vocabulary, and concentration. To cope with those difficulties, the students frequently used social strategies, memory-related strategies, compensatory strategies, meta-cognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, and affective strategies. It is expected that the result of the study could contribute to listening classes.
