  • The economic potential of the manufacturing industry in East Java is relatively large compared to other economic sectors. The rapid growth in the manufacturing industry in East Java will have an impact on the economic development of East Java, especially the economic sectors which have high inter-sector linkages. However, since 2004 the manufacturing industries in East Java have symptoms of de-industrialization, namely the phenomenon of decline in the ratio of manufacturing to GDP continuously. In addition, East Java manufacturing industries will also face the ASEAN single market that would apply in 2015. This will provide greater competitive challenges. Thus, it is necessary to exploit the potential of the development strategy of manufacturing industries in East Java in facing the challenges of global change. The purpose of this study was to analyze (1) manufacturing industry linkages with other economic sectors, (2) analyze the impact of the development of the manufacturing industry to the economy of East Java, and (3) formulate strategies for the development of the manufacturing industry in East Java to be able to contribute the growth rate of East Java greater. Analytical tool in this study is the Input Output Model. The analysis showed that the degree of relatedness of the manufacturing industry and other economic sectors are relatively high, especially for backward linkages (upstream linkages). The development of manufacturing industry also gives a fairly high economic impact on the economy of East Java. To face the increasing global competition, the development of manufacturing industries in East Java are not only intended to increase the comparative advantage, but also to increase competitive advantage.
