- It cannot be denied that teachers' role is very important in teaching and learning process. It is strongly argued by Campbell, Kyriakides, Muijsc & Robinsona (2004), stated in Shishavan & Sadeghi (2009), that teachers have a fundamental role in learners' academic achievement and teachers' quality can highly influence learners' outcomes. To date, there are many thoughts and studies about which one becomes the better teacher between native English-speaking teacher (NEST) or non-native English-speaking teacher (non-NEST) since it has been an interesting issue to be revealed because the results could be different in each setting. The purpose of this study is to find out the students' perception toward whether NEST and non-NEST is the more eligible English teacher to teach a speaking course. The participants of this study were 82 students at the English Department (ED) of Satya Wacana Christian University (SWCU) Salatiga who had already taken interpersonal speaking course. A set of questionnaires was used as the only instrument to collect the data. The result of the study indicated that the participants preffered NEST as the more eligible teacher to teach interpersonal speaking course rather than non-NEST.
