- People will constantly have to deal with problems in their daily lives. People may experience anxiety when attempting to solve their problems. In order to reduce anxiety, people will use defense mechanisms so that they can continue their activities. This study focuses on the main character, Zhu in She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan. It aims to find out Zhu’s anxieties and defense mechanisms. The analysis of Zhu’s anxieties and defense mechanism will be based on three important major events in Zhu’s life, in her childhood, life in the monastery, and when she joins the Red Turbans. Zhu’s path of life always takes a sudden turn and is filled with problems as she’s trying to survive the world. Using Freud’s Psychoanalysis theory, this study identifies two objectives (1) to find out the anxieties Zhu experiences while facing problems in her life, and (2) to describe the defense mechanisms Zhu uses to deal with her anxieties. The findings show that (1) the main character, Zhu experiences neurotic, reality, and more anxieties while facing problems in childhood, life in the monastery, when she joins the rebels. Zhu uses several defense mechanisms to deal with her anxieties (2) which are repression, sublimation, rationalization, and regression
