- This study aimed to explore factors that trigger students’ speaking anxiety in an online speaking class. More specifically, this study was conducted in Academic Speaking classes at the English Language Education Program, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (FLA-UKSW), Salatiga. The participants of the study were 33 students of the 2020 academic year at FLA-UKSW. The data were collected using a questionnaire and an interview. The questionnaire was analyzed in two ways, which were quantitative with statistical analysis and qualitative with narrative analysis to classify questionnaire data based on participant responses that showed high levels of anxiety. The 17 questionnaire items were adapted from Chowdhury's (2014) research. In the interview data, seven participants were given several questions to elaborate further from the questionnaire they had previously filled out. The data analysis appeared to prove that participants felt anxious when they needed to take the learning process in an online Academic Speaking class. Participants also felt anxious when they participated in the tasks in the class. The anxiety appeared because of several reasons, which were students’ lack of competence in linguistic items, fear of performance in completing assessments, participants’ feelings when talking to someone who is more fluent in English, fear of making mistakes in front of the teacher, and the lack of understanding of a topic. This study is hoped to give insights to teachers about factors that can cause students’ learning anxiety.
