- This study analyzes the occurrences of code-mixing in the readers‟ letters of LOOKS and CHIC magazines. The study aims at finding out: 1) the most frequent types of code-mixing occurring in both magazines; 2) reasons for code-mixing; and 3) the influence of age toward code-mixing. The data were collected from readers‟ letters published in LOOKS and CHIC magazines from January to December 2010 and also questionnaires distributed to 40 respondents. Muysken‟s (2000) theories on types of code-mixing: insertion, alternation and congruent lexicalization were employed to analyze frequent types of code-mixing. Hoffman (1991) and Saville-Troike (2003) theories on reasons for code-mixing were employed to analyze reasons for code-mixing. Results of types of code-mixing frequency analysis and reasons for code-mixing analysis were then analyzed and interpreted to find the influence of age toward code-mixing. The study showed insertion as the most frequent type of code-mixing occurring in both magazines, whereas using lexical items with no equivalent, showing empathy and/or solidarity, and talking about a particular topic dominates the reasons for code-mixing. The study also showed the influence of age toward code-mixing in regard to one‟s attitude toward code-mixing. In general, the findings of the study point to the significant influence of age toward code-mixing.
