- Human society was applied in a mixed-ability world, so as with education field. Many education institutions apply mixed-ability classroom management where the students with different ability level were mixed in one class. However, this system would arise various of challenges and needed strategies to cope with. This descriptive qualitative study attempted to investigate the challenges the teacher met during teaching process and the strategies the teacher created to cope with the challenges. Deep interview was done to 1 English teacher of fifth grade classes who was teaching in 7 different classes in SD Kristen Terang Bangsa by using a list of twelve criteria of mixed ability class and 18 interview questions as the instruments. The result of this study showed that there were some challenges. The syllabus and teacher’s guide were not sufficient, learners’ learning speed and motivation were highly variant. The strategies to cope with were to develop a more creative and practicable syllabus and teachers guide, created additional assignments for fast learners and built a good communication with students’ parents to gain higher motivation of the students. This showed that despite of all the challenges, the teacher could manage to find strategies.
