  • This study is based on a preliminary observation in an English lesson class in a junior high school. I found that students often are shy and unconfident to speak in English. They prefer to convey their idea written than spoken. Based on this preliminary observation, I decided to conduct this study. This study was conducted to explore the drama techniques in teaching speaking skills. It used an action research framework that was conducted in a private SMP in Salatiga. The samples used in this study are 8th grader students of 2010/2011 academic year. The study was conducted in in five lesson meetings. The techniques I used for the study are language game, mime, readers teather, and role play. As it was an action reseach, the analyses of the data were taken from observation notes and interviews. It was a cycled process, where the next activity is decided based on previous activity' reflection. The major findings of this study is that drama techniques work in reducing the students' anxiety and increasing oral fluency in speaking in English.
