  • Teaching speaking is an essential aspect of developing students' sociolinguistic competence in a foreign language at any level. Speaking is a complicated skill because it needs many elements to be simultaneously used at a time. The purpose of this research is to describe how is teaching speaking to the eleventh grade students of SMA 2 Bae Kudus in the academic year 2016/2017, and to find out the problems in teaching speaking. The writer used a descriptive qualitative research design. The data of this research is teaching speaking the eleventh grade students. Meanwhile, the instrument used is interview and observation. The subject of this research is the teacher of SMA 2 Bae Kudus. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the method of teaching speaking implemented by the teacher are: explaining what students will do and what benefit they will get from the activity before starting the teaching and learning process, do paired or group, role play and drilling, teacher also motivate and give reinforcement to the students. The media used in teaching speaking are white board, books, poster, laptop, and LCD. And the teacher evaluated the teaching speaking using question-answer. The writer concluded that the English teacher found problems to teach speaking but she can solve the problems by using her strategies. The writer suggests to improve the strategies in teaching English so that the students are interested to learn English especially in speaking.
