  • Speaking is one of elements of human daily activities. The writer can share ideas and thoughts with other people by speaking. A smooth interaction between people can take place in that way. Speaking skill is taught to students to make them capable of communicating by using English correctly. In fact, a teacher has less motivation to give the students’ special treatment in teaching speaking. This research is to find out the answer from the statement of the problem; First, “can Fishbowl Discussion improve student’s speaking ability of the tenth grade students of SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2013/2014?”. Second, “What are the strengths and the weaknesses of using Fishbowl Discussion when it is applied at the tenth grade students of SMA NU AL Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 to improve students’ speaking ability?” This is a classroom action research. The research was conducted in SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus. Subject of the research is the grade X-1 in second semester. The material used is descriptive text. The writer uses some instrument in this research. Observation and achievement test. There were four steps in conducting the Classroom Action Research i.e. planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The result of this research shows that the improvements happen in every cycle. In cycle I, the average score of achievement test of speaking ability by using Fishbowl Discussion technique is 71.06 then the average from 71.06 into percentage to be 71.06%. In cycle II, the average score of achievement test of speaking ability by using Fishbowl Discussion technique in cycle II is 81.46 then the average score from 81.46 into percentage to be 81.46% so the speaking ability in cycle II is very satisfied. The writer concluded that Fishbowl Discussion as a technique of teaching English had proven effective in improving the ability of English speaking of the students of SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. Based on the result of the research above, the writer can conclude that the use of Fishbowl Discussion can improve students’ speaking ability at the Tenth Grade Students of SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus in the academic 2013/2014. First, the writer suggests that the English teacher should try to use fishbowl discussion as one of the teaching technique. Second, English teacher should encourage the students to improve their speaking ability by giving more practice and exercise. It is to make students fell fun and active in class. So it can improve their speaking ability.
