  • Regarding reading habits, students of Extensive Reading (ER) class of English Education Department of Universitas Muria Kudus had poor reading habits. They only read short functional texts and Indonesian local stories from internet in the pre-requisite course, Intensive Reading. In fact, they should have read around 9000 per week as students of college. ER is reading for pleasure and the learning objective of this course is to improve the students’ reading fluency. As teaching ER is new for me, I consulted to literature and got an idea of having the students read and maintain reading logs. The objective of the research was investigating if reading logs may promote the students’ reading habits. This present research is a qualitative research. It describes to what extent reading logs might promote the students’ reading habits. The instruments used to collect the data were observation, classroom discussion, and reading logs. The participants of the research were 28 students of ER Class B, 26 females and 2 males. Findings of the research reveals that reading logs promoted the students’ reading habits. Although it may not a major factor, it did contribute to the students reading habits in terms of increasing number of words, amount of books and articles, and their own claim on reading habits. Surprisingly, in the classroom discussion they admitted that they enjoyed reading but not maintaining the logs. A possible further research would be survey on the students’ reading habits to see whether they keep reading after the research was accomplished. This research also recommends the department to provide more graded readers books and set a regular program of extensive reading for the entire students as an effort to promote reading habits
