With speaking, we can express our idea, feeling, hope, etc. In teaching speaking, the teachers should choose appropriate technique for the students’ condition. The teaching technique that has been used to improve the students’ speaking ability is English competition.
The main purpose of this research is to find out whether English Competition can improve the speaking ability of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP N 3 Jekulo Kudus in Academic Year 2012/2013. In specific, the purpose of the research are to get information about (1) The implementation of English competition in improving the speaking ability of the eighth grade students of SMP N 3 Jekulo Kudus in Academic Year 2012/2013. (2) The speaking ability of the eighth grade students of SMP N 3 Jekulo Kudus in Academic Year 2012/2013. (3) The teacher’s problems in teaching speaking by using English Competition for the eighth grade students of SMP N 3 Jekulo Kudus in Academic Year 2012/2013.
This research uses Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. It consisted of three cycles. Each cycle consisted of four steps, namely (1) planning, (2) acting, (3) observing, and (4) reflecting. Cycle 1 was held on July 2012, while cycle 2 and cycle 3 was held on Augusts 2012. The subject of this research was the students of class VIII F of SMP N 3 Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2012/2013. In collecting data, the writer used oral test, observation, and questionnaire. The test was done when the students were doing the competition in every cycle.
The result of this research shows that the use of English competition can improve the speaking ability of the eighth grade students of SMP N 3 Jekulo Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013. The students’ average score improves from 53.14 in cycle 1, 66.42 in cycle 2, and 78.89 in cycle 3. 
The writer suggests to the other English teachers to use appropriate technique in teaching English so that the teaching and learning process runs smoothly and effectively.
