- The objective of this doctoral research is to define a management model to the virtual library for use in distance education, considers the services feature, in computer networks, in the process of learning in this modality of education. The bibliographical research is used for the literature reference context, focuses the importance of the libraries in the distance education learning process and uses the management of information services and products of the digital information environment in computer networks. The management processes are used as a technique to manage the virtual library. A empirical study, involves observation and characterizes the research environment of the Engineering of Production Post-Graduation Program at the Federal University of Santa Catarina State (Brazil). The questions in the data collection questionnaire had been selected in six categories dimensions: the use, the efficiency, the motivation, the distribution of digital information, the training necessary to use sources of online information, and the access place. The analysis of the results by the collected data, made possible the characterization of the information needs and the demands of the subjects involved in distance learning courses offered at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, to enable the development of online information, distance education, management model. This management model is based on the conditions of the logistic infrastructure from computer networks, mainly focusing on the efficiency of the processes, considering management processes of work in the virtual library's specific area of the knowledge. The model's conclusions and recommendations are focused on the operational viability and implementation technique of this online information, distance education, management model in Brazil. The peculiarity of this management model consists of being the point of access to organized online information that meets the demands of distance education users. The feature, of this management model centers in the selection, compilation and dissemination of the online contents. It makes possible a new form of knowledge organization in the learning process offered in distance education programs that meets the demands and satisfies the users needs.
