- The interdisciplinary nature of information retrieval poses difficulties when trying to establish a sound definition for all the related sciences of the field. This paper proposes a definition of information retrieval in the context of library and information science and thereby offers a global vision taking the main concepts given in the literature of the field. It also examines the influence of these concepts and their interdisciplinary relationship with informatics, and library and information science. Subsequently, an intradisciplinary analysis is made within library and information science in order to establish its own frontiers and determine its own identity.
