  • Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) refers to the computer-to-computer exchange of commercial and administrative information / documents using a standardized data format and eliminating human participation. Standardized EDI messages are based on common business documents such as invoices, purchase orders and bills of lading and are sent from one computer to another over telecommunication links without human intervention or interpretation. While academic libraries are not primarily engaged in commercial activities, they do operate in a commercial environment. Libraries buy books, serials, CD-ROMs and other material from multiple suppliers, are invoiced for those materials and payments are made. They are also involved in other commercial operations such as payment of photocopies or printings, document delivery services and interlibrary loans. All the above indicate that libraries in general have many points in common with commercial enterprises. Thus, this paper addresses issues on the use of electronic data interchange and electronic commerce from an academic library to operations such as acquisitions and on how various book and serials industry groups work to develop EDI standards and promote their use in both Europe and North America.
