  • Library & Information Service (LIS) of the University of Patras, utilizing its long experience on Interlibrary Loans, started a study to improve the relevant services, aiming to cover the continuously increasing demands for scientific information by introducing current methods and procedures. The main aspects this study had to deal with, were: the organization of the procedures flow, the continuous introduction of new information sources and databases, the rational and effective information search, evaluation and retrieval methods, the introduction of modern technologies, the inadequate staffing of the relevant department, and finally the optimal pricing and costing method of the services taking into account the particularities of the academic society in general. The structure of the methodology adopted is as follow: - the organization of the Interlibrary Loan procedures, with the introduction and application of a simple system of codification, step by step inventory and monitoring of every single inquire concerning article photocopies of book loans, - the selection, after successive trials, and use of specific national and international technological advanced document delivery services and scientific information databases, using on-line searching and ordering procedures, the appropriate staffing of the ILL department for qualitative and quantitative support of the new procedures adopted, - the adoption and application of a pricing and costing policy for the relevant services offered to the users, taking into account the Library's financial as well as the Library's social and supporting role to the education and scientific research. Results from the proposed methodology trials were extremely interesting and quite satisfactory, not only as far as users service concerns, but also as far as the ability of controlling and evaluating the procedures.
