  • The Aegean Ark is a pilot project which was financed by the General Secretariat of Research and Technology and developed under the auspices of the University of the Aegean Library. The overall objective was to create a scale model for a network of prototype forms of organised storage for cultural-related documentation on or originating from the Greek Archipelago. The prototypes will operate under a common set of classification and research codes as well as electronical support for the storage and research of the documentation. Its ultimate goal is to provide solutions for technical and organisational problems which such a network entails and to design standardised solutions within a pilot module, enabling a multiple re-application for the gradual coverage of the entire target field. The Project is directed by Professor Costas Man. So-phoulis in cooperation with Associate Professor Sotiris Htouris. The pilot module of the network consists of the Library of the University, the «Korai» Library of Chios, the Historic Archive of Samos,..._lb.e... Archaeological-Museum of Samos and the Laboratory of Cultural Technology of the Department of Social Anthropology (University of the Aegean). Each of the network «nodes» is an example of the form and content that is suitable for its respective category. More specifically, the Lab of Cultural Technology is an active unit for the collection and organisation of scattered cultural documentation (music, dance, folklore material, audio-visual material etc.), whose mission is to create «achives» and related databases for material which has not yet been stored in the respective info points. The pilot project was completed over a three-year period, while the pilot network is already in trial operation. It is accessible via the Internet; the Library of the University provides the technical support. The nodes of the pilot network apply common storing, cataloging and research standards for all printed material and other items under the GEAC system as regards library items, and STATUS when handling museum and archive items. The next phase of the project will be the expansion of the network so as to include new units and agencies wishing to participate in the network. The development of the Network depends on the financial resources that will be provided. The Central Library Unit of the University of the Aegean continues to have the managerial responsibility, until a specialised management unit is organised, which will work exclusively for this purpose.
