- The library's immediate goal is to support the new role its parent organization is called to play in tertiary education; the development of research, the provision of graduate studies and the distribution of distance learning programs. Hence, the library should develop the appropriate service models and be stuffed with competent professional personnel capable of meeting and sa¬tisfying these needs. The library has set as its priority, within the framework of its modernization, to respond to the new information needs of its users. The re-suits of a user survey, conducted in the library in 1998, provide guidance in this direction. According to these findings 86.3% of the TEI academic community use libraries to support their scholarly or research activities, but the median of the total satisfaction from using the TEI library services was only 33,6. The library should satisfy the existing, ex¬pressed needs, but should also strive to foster the appropriate environment which will bring to the surface needs the users are not aware of, or create new ones, since users according to the results seem to be unaware of services that an academic library could and should provide. Furthermore the library should develop into a viable information provider, com¬peting successfully with other agencies which might try to displace it. In this context the library's primary goals should be to respond to the needs for lifelong learning, distance learning, remote information access, strengthen its educational role, develop educated information consumers and become a locus for research activities.
