- Academic libraries, like any other kind of "traditional" libraries are going currently through a period of rapid and radical changes. However, unlike other types of information services, the emerging changes in the functional position of the academic libraries are characterized by a peculiar contradiction. On the one hand there is a gradual disintegration of the traditional entity of the "library-institution" and a "diffusion" and merging of its functions with most of the other academic activities. On the other hand several new functions and responsibilities can now be considered as part of the library work. These new functions lead to the development of a new and expanded role for the library. This paper attempts to trace the process leading from the "diffusion" of the library's functions to the development of a new role for this type of institutions. More specifically, the paper attempts to identify the technological and functional causes of this evolution, and to indicate the new functions that seem to become gradually part of the traditional library work. It attempts also to identify the functional elements that define the quality change of the functional position of the Academic Libraries and differentiate the form and the way of their incorporation in the academic environment.
