  • The Library of the University of Macedonia participates in the project ACCELERATE (ACCESS TO THE MODERN LIBRARY SERVICES FOR THE BLIND AND PARTIALLY SIGHTED PEOPLE) which was launched in January 2000 and is funded by the European Union in the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci 1999 Program. This project aims at providing access to modern library services for the visually impaired users: students, faculty members, researchers etc. The latest technological achievements can make quality services available to users with sight problems allowing them to access every source of information in a modern library. The latest results of this project and the experience acquired by the Library are presented in the fields of: a) adaptive technology, b) the initiation of new services within the Library's operations, c) the development of administrative supportive structures by an academic institution, and d) the training of users with sight problems and the library personnel as well, in the adaptive technologies and services. Finally a framework of integrated services customized to the reality of Greek academic libraries is proposed; this would not only apply to visually impaired people but to people with other disabilities as well, such as hearing and movement problems.
