- Two main systems are used in libraries and information units: Subject Headings catalogues and Thesauri. Their respective advantages and disadvantages are summarized. Methodologies of building up and managing both monolingual and multilingual thesauri are examined. The subject coverage, characteristics and use of well-known thesauri are presented. The integrated library systems available in the Greek market are examined and some special thesaurus management software are presented. Sources of information, available on the Internet, dealing with thesauri, thesaurus management software and the criteria for their evaluation are also presented. The current situation of subject processing of documents in Greek libraries is examined. Attention is given to the efforts that have been made by Greek libraries for post-coordinate indexing as well as for the creation of a post-coordinated subject approach for the incoming Union catalogue in the framework of HealLink. The issues of education in building and using thesauri are also given. Finally, international developments in subject indexing are briefly presented focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of using thesauri in bibliographic data processing of the collections and some policy recommendations are proposed.
