- The Library of the University of Thessaly was set up in 1988. The objective of high priority was and still is it's utilization by all citizens of the Thessaly area. The Faculty of Humanities Library Branch Special emphasis was given to the core of the collection, which should be capable of covering extensively all informational requests or reading interest around every field of knowledge. Established in the '90s, it is a contemporary and scientific library. All those factors mentioned above, along with: - The effective management of human and material resources, - The abundance of specialized staff, - The continuing collection enrichment - The all year round operation, - The modern material and its technical infrastructure, - The free use of Internet and - Its city center location attract a number of unaffiliated clientele, of different age, profession, education and social characteristics. They have the privilege of using many specialized or non-specialized services, concerning their studies, post studies, their jobs and their long-life education. From the growing number of non-academic visitors to this Branch of the University Library, it is clear that the Library is "gaining" an important share of clientele compared to the rest of Local Libraries. Nevertheless what is not obvious is also the lack of a bi-directional, constant, unofficial but essential collaboration between the University Library and the rest of Local Libraries. The long experience and practice of the Thessaly University Library, contradicts a) the fears of many other Greek Academic Libraries, for qualitative and quantitative decrease in their services, in case they served also citizens besides academics, a task suitable only for local libraries according to their opinion, b) the belief that Academic Libraries when serving citizens are boycotting the function of local Libraries. Our main concern must be the establishment and activation of Libraries (having an impact on the cultural and scientific development of our country) and the careful use of experience and technology towards a fair and without discriminations and exclusions spread of knowledge.
