- Library architecture is a subject that has barely concerned the Creek librarian community, which has not been seriously preoccupied with it or, in most cases, its opinions were totally ignored. The pressing need to organize the collections sidetracked the building issue, but the solution is not a luxury, it is a demanding need. We rarely talk about where and how these collections are being housed and even more seldom we elaborate on projects about the construction and reconstruction of library buildings. The space and aesthetics issue should not be faced fragmentarily and by case or as an utopical syndrome. The architectural form of libraries should seriously concern us in face of the new technologies, which anyway challenge the limits of the modern library. A library without walls is a reality. The new profile and image of the modern library is not only her web page but also its natural space. The physical dimensions of the information space, meaning the library space, should serve the real, functional and informational needs of a library that will be called in the future to play a different role than today. Academic libraries and their departments confront many problems concerning the building, the space, the architectural planning and the aesthetics part but also the other libraries in Greece are in a similar situation, with some exceptions. It is noted that many new library buildings ignore the aesthetics part or neglect basic constructional and functional standards for the accommodation of their collections and services. In the paper we will present the modem concepts about library architecture and also the architectural tendencies which prevail in Greece. Though a librarian view we will try to approach the architectural design, to revise and to define our role in it in order to focus our views on where and how we deposit house knowledge and to find solutions that will cover the new functional and informational needs. Also, thought positions and appositions of a well-organized aesthetics prism we will try to set issues and to make an effort to predict the architectural future of libraries. In this future of course all are called to contribute: architects, interior designers, constructors, preservers and certainly librarians, by having a flawless professional collaboration.
