- The current need for valid and up-to-date information along with the increasing production of scientific knowledge have led to a significant alteration of today's educational process. Ε-learning and distance education constitute educational materials characterized by a broad utilization of information technology in order to meet the demand for off-campus, continuous and life long learning. In the core of these modifications, academic libraries play a crucial role in their effort to provide high level library services. In this paper both aspects of the educational reformation are depicted: from the provider's perspective (educational institute / organization, library etc.) and-from the learner's point of view. The concept of e-learning is analyzed in depth, and the impact of technological innovations on the total educational process is focused. Methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of an e-learning program throughout an organization or an educational institute is provided. Usage statistics of the available library services in the case of distance- or e-learners are presented in detail. It is shown that although the provided services and scientific sources have increased significantly, the distance-learning community does not yet exploit them in a sufficient degree. Furthermore, the optimal structure of a digital library in terms of technological and operational issues, so as to efficiently support and provide high-level services to the distance and e-learners is presented. Finally, the increasing necessity for cooperation between modem libraries and educational institutions, as well as the shortand mid-term estimation of its form in the near future and of its acceptance by the scientific and technological community is assessed.
