- The term digital library is often used with various meanings, which are related either with the concept of the electronic or the virtual library or with the existence of a particular collection in digital form, in a networked or non-networked environment. In any case, the digital library refers to the primary document, which the users can get directly through the Internet. In the present paper, the concept of the digital library is defined first, followed by a brief report to the use of the term worldwide, in relation to above concepts of electronic and virtual library and the implementations that have been developed in other countries, of which some examples are presented here. The importance of digital libraries development is reported, with particular reference to the relation of the digital library concept with the preservation and communication concepts. These parameters have a particular importance in the Greek environment, and this is analyzed in more details here. The presentation of greek situation follows, based on a search on the Internet, using a greek search engine. The evaluation of the search results takes into consideration the above analysis, with the aim to locate the meanings given to the term digital library in particular applications. In some cases, the term is used for applications related to digitized collections of the particular organisation which maintains the website found in the search. In other cases, the term refers to web sites of other organisations with digital library applications or are just gateways for access to various electronic information services on the Internet. Besides the evaluation concerning the terminology concepts, the search results are also evaluated taking into account the preservation and communication parameters. A particular experience of digital libraries development is described at the end, that of the Technical Chamber of Greece, and various related issues are discussed.
