- In recent years libraries, and more specifically Academic libraries, "taking advantage" of the possibilities offered by new technologies, have been able to extend the services they provide to special groups of users, such as the Disabled and the dyslexic, whom they had never had the opportunity to serve before, due to difficulty of accessing either their venue or material. However, this "extending" of the libraries to such groups of users, is not an easily achievable task. It presupposes special knowledge and study of the means necessary for meeting the needs of such persons, depending on the problems these users are facing (visual or hearing impairment, physical disability, speech or learning difficulty, etc). This article, following a literature review of research approaches and practices implemented world-wide for the Disabled, attempts to classify services that may become available to such users. There are three basic parts: 1. Removing the barriers from using the Internet; 2. Enriching the library with special types of materials; 3. Acquiring special technical equipment. More specifically for the dyslexic, available tools developed in libraries abroad are presented and specific practical proposals for their adaptation, organisation and orientation within the library are presented. Nevertheless, appropriate building infrastructure, enriching the collections and acquiring special technical equipment are not enough. Adaptations in the legislation, training of librarians and publication of specific guidelines are considered necessary administrative actions to support the provision of such "special" services. In conclusion, there is some lagging behind of Greek Academic Libraries in regards to serving certain special user groups, which is not due to lack of sensitivity or awareness but, mainly, to ignorance of modern supporting adaptive technologies and means of providing access to information through alternative forms and methods.
