- As Greek academic libraries are being modernized in high speeds, their websites are evolving into important meeting points for the professionals in information management and the actual users of information. Despite their initial intent to help information flows the big amount of and the diversity of the data, usually results into an overload which distracts and often demotivates searching. Studies focusing on website usability have increased significantly over the last years. The results of those studies reveal a wide range of usability problems like poor-defined terminolo¬gy and inappropriate use of colors. In addition, many websites do not redesign their appearance whenever they add new content or modify existing ones. At our current research, we evaluated the website of a Greek academic library, using the methodology of "formal usability testing". Our research was based in a combination of obser¬vation and interviews and the test was applied in a typical, for the Greek standards, environ¬ment which was developed over the last years in the library of the Technological Educational Institute of Serres. Our sample consisted of 10 persons from 6 different departments, repre¬senting usual types of web users in a academic community, varying from experienced researchers to first year students with no web experience. We depicted 11 goals-searches and a couple of observers watched the users while searching in the website. The test took place in the actual library of the institution using the think-aloud method. These qualitative data were added to the quantitative data of a written questionnaire. The analysis of the data revealed that the website was designed from the librarian's point of view, but not the user's. This test also resulted to another interesting point. That testing the usability of the website of an academic library is neither difficult nor expensive task and the results definitely improve its value. Therefore, we suggest that research in this field must be enhanced and usability testing must be applied broadly on Greek academic libraries, in order to improve their usefulness to the academic community.
