- This research was carried out to know the requirement for the professional librarians in the North Sumatra Province. Through this research, was gotten the picture about the librarian’s situation qualitatively and quantitatively all over the available library in the North Sumatra. Results of data processing showed that is gotten by the difference that very significant between the number and the ideal qualification the librarian compared with the number and the librarian’s available qualification to the library that became the respondent. Still was needed by 933 librarians for the respondent’s 80 libraries, with the qualification S2 totalling 32 librarians, S1 totalling 150 librarians, and S0 totalling 751 librarians. The situation that is very sad happened in SLTA and SLTP, where almost all the schools did not have librarians. Libraries to these schools generally are managed by the teachers.
