- Britannica encyclopedia is a prestigious name in the scholarly world. There was quite a commotion when Nature published a report comparing Britannica with Wikepedia - an online free encyclopedia. The report concluded that the number of faults/discrepencies in Britannica is slightly lower compared to Wikipedia. In response to this publication of Nature, Britannica waged a war on Nature. This article highlights the vast possibilities and hurdles for Wikipedia to grow into an authentic online reference source. It also highlights with statistics the strengths, weaknesses and growing popularity of Wikipedia. The author concludes that using online wikepedia as a reference source instead of costly encyclopedias like Britannica is both economically and strategically beneficial to Public Libraries and Schools.
