  • Obstetrics is defined and characterized as a present medical specialty and as an art exercised by man since ancient times. References are offered on the documentary sources that constitute the first written testimonies of this practice at the international level before Christ and up to the first years of the XIX century. The actions linked to the art of assisting women in childbirth among Cuban aborigines are identified and classic works on the discipline produced in Cuba or by Cuban authors in other nations during the colonial period are reported in the style of factual information. Finally, a brief account of the history of the Revista Cubana de Obstetricia y Ginecología as an instrument of dissemination of the scientific society bearing the same name is made from its upsurge up to now. Its founder members are mentioned. This article intends to help the doctors and information professionals, mainly the obstetricians and librarians who work in institutions dedicated to the beautiful activity of bringing children into the world, by providing the first with a useful reference work for the assistance, research and teaching activity, and the latter with a work of aggregate value to support the rendering of higher quality services.
