  • This article aims to synthesize the operations of book traffic through the Carrera de Indias (trade between Spain and its colonies in the Americas) at the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth centuries. The first part describes commerce in printed material in the Iberian Peninsula generally and Seville in particular, as background for the analysis of a group of book shipments sent to Quito through Seville’s commercial networks. This case study reveals the varied participation of different agents in the distribution of books and the means employed to ensure the books’ arrival in American territory. Through an analysis of title lists, the author evaluates distinct types of book shipments and provides insight regarding the movement of printed works through the distribution circuits of the Carrera de Indias. Also presented are some initial findings on the books’ destinations and the commercial exchange networks in which printed works were traded.
