- Two paradigms have guided the research in information retrieval: one focused in algorithms design and information retrieval systems, and other focused in all the factors that have an effect on the user's information search process. This article revises characteristics and current trends in research in both paradigms, analyzing criticisms than these paradigms have received related to the different methodology and difficulty to define relevance and to measure changes derived from mental state of user.
