- This paper reflects the state of the art of digital documents organization and retrieval. There are reviewed and compared the international standardization initiatives about traditional cataloguing of electronic resources (from ISBD (ER) to MARC21), the digital information and new information representation standards like XML, as well as the standards related to the new concept of metainformation, paying attention to their disciplinary conditions. There are also studied trends, initiatives, projects and perspectives of electronic information management and organization in Spain, paying special attention to Catalonian information landscape. Interoperability between Spanish information systems and services are also studied, as well as global interoperability perspective based on metadata, protocols and conventions.
