- Many articles have been written about what digital resources represent –or could represent– for improving the performance of ‘memory institutions’. But the majority of them refer to digital resources as things to be consumed and made available to users, but rarely as something to be produced and later made available to them. Starting with the functions of archives, the article proposes the creation of digital resources according to standards (metadata structures, OAI–PMH, semantic Web, etc.) in order to enhance resource discovery and information visibility, for specialists as well as for other types of users. Europe must give top priority to the development of new information retrieval systems and new products based on emerging standards and protocols in order for European countries to achieve a more competitive standing within the information society.
