- At the end of the nineties Cibermetrics and Webometrics came into existence by applying Bibliometrics, Scientometrics and Informetrics to Internet studies. The objective is to describe contents and communication processes though quantitative methods. In this paper we study literature of this young area in order to identify the trends and emerging research fronts from the beginning to the present. The following points are discussed: definition, conceptualization and sub-areas of this field, employed techniques, contributions to other fields, and problems. Finally, the state of the art in Spain is described.
