- The purpose of this study is to determine how critical and positive the articles and news items on libraries and librarianship published in Turkish newspapers are about the librarianship activities of the public sector and the private and/or civilian organizations. For this purpose, the articles and news items on libraries and librarianship in 9 different Turkish newspapers published from 1996 to 1999 were examined and data were analysed using Chi square. It was found that there is a relationship between the characteristics (critical or positive) of the articles and news items on libraries and librarianship published in Turkish newspapers and the librarianship activities of different sectors. The relationship, which is significant statistically is that the number of critical papers on the librarianship activities of the public sector are more than the ones on librarianship activities of private and/or civilian organizations. The topical distribu tion of items revealed that the building of new libraries was the most frequently written topic followed by such topics as the scarcity of the number of librarians employed in libraries, closed down libraries, and the insufficiency of the library budgets. Also, the number of critical articles and news items on libraries and librarianship published in selected Turkish newspapers are significantly more than positive items, which means that the Turkish press tries to inform the public about the problems of libraries and librarianship in Turkey. So, the Turkish librarians, especially the ones employed in the public sector libraries should take more responsibility in cooperating more with the press in legal ways for informing the public both about the problems of libraries and librarianship in Turkey and about the solutions for these problems in order to influence the public opinion on this matter on a wider scale.
