- The phenomena that have given rise to the debate on the correct denomination and Institutional the most appropriate contents to incorporate to the "Institutional Repositories in Open Access" are analyzed, arisen like strategy from the Open Access Movement in 2002 with the Declaration of Budapest. The appearance of numerous tipologies of e-documents along with the functions associated them has given rise to an interesting debate on the convenience of the change of denomination and the determination of what content is adapted, useful and effective for the development of such. Through the debate maintained in the list of distribuitions JISC-REPOSITORIES distribution during the months of January and February of 2006, along with the analysis of the bibliography recommended during the debate and the compiled by the authors, this first work is obtained like previous step to the tutorial that will be developed in "10th European Conference on Research and Advanced for Technology Digital Libraries". The result is the establishment of basic criteria for the definition of all "Institutional Repository", as well as a classification of the tipology and the own functions of a OA IR. All denomination and definition must be sustained by the philosophy of work of the Open Access Movement and by the necessities of the funding institution of repository. In the same way the content must be endorsed by criteria of scientific quality, impact and fulfillment of the functions and strategic targets of the organization.
