- The article presents various types of electronic (virtual, digital) reference services offered by libraries around the world, from the simplest ones e.g. e-mail to most advanced services such as interactive ones based on chat technology. The author describes the operation of different applications. Special attention has been paid to Web contact center software. Some examples of international and regional collaborative live reference services have been presented. Standards, guidelines and models of the introduction of virtual reference services (e.g. those of IFLA and ALA) are also reviewed. Basing on literature review, the article presents some statistical data, results of a survey of digital reference services and some issues mentioned by practitioners.
